Nine-run ninth inning lifts Rockies
Yeah. That just happened.
In what looked like a hopeless scenario, the Rockies went into the bottom of the 9th inning down 9-3 to the Cardinals. Then the bottom of the ninth came.
To recap: Miguel Olivo singled. Seth Smith lined out. Melvin Mora singled. Clint Barmes walked (surprise!) and Olivo scored on a passed ball. Chris Iannetta hit a three-run homer... and the Rockies were still behind by two runs.
Hopeless? Not at all. Dexter Fowler followed that with a double. Fowler moved up to third on a groundout by Brad Hawpe. Carlos Gonzalez hit an RBI single. Still behind 9-8. Jason Giambi singled. Miguel Olivo hit his second single of the inning. And then Seth Smith hit a walk-off three-run homer.
Again: That really happened.
So the Rockies won 12-9, despite a bad outing by Jeff Francis. Of course, the Rockies had already knocked 11 hits even before the ninth inning. And on a night when the Padres lost, this was huge.
Rockies Top Three
1. Seth Smith: 3-for-4, two walks, walkoff homer. 'Nuff said.
2. Carlos Gonzalez: 4-for-6 with his fifteenth homer of the season. Good night.
3. Jason Giambi: 3-for-5 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored.
