The Coors Effect

August 26, 2010 7:06 AM

Rockies minor league report: August 25

Colorado Springs 7, Salt Lake 3
Sky Sox: 58-73, 10 GB
W: Josh Muecke (6-7)
L: Fernando Rodriguez (4-6)

A seven-run second inning accounted for all of the Sky Sox' scoring, and all of the runs they would need, as starter Josh Muecke (7.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) kept Salt Lake off the board for the most part.  3B-1B Brad Eldred (.269/.332/.582) hit two doubles and drove in a run; SS Chris Nelson (.316/.373/.502) had two hits and three RBI.

Arkansas 5, Tulsa 4
Drillers: 32-26, 3 GB (2nd half)
W: Jeremy Haynes (3-0)
L: Chris Malone (3-4)
SV: Ismael Carmona (12)

A late Arkansas rally after starter Cory Riordan (7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K) left the game doomed the Drillers.  DH Scott Beerer (.246/.280/.306) hit his fourth homer of the season in the second inning, but after the second inning Arkansas kept the Drillers off the board until the ninth inning.  3B Matt Repec (.185/.268/.273) had two hits, one of them a double.

Modesto 5, Stockton 3
Nuts: 29-29, 6 GB (2nd half)
W: Josh Sullivan (2-2)
L: Scott Hodsdon (2-3)
SV: Casey Weathers (4)

SS Thomas Field (.288/.398/.471) went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead Modesto over Stockton last night.  DH Erik Wetzel (.276/.342/.314) went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while 1B Ben Paulsen (.313/.355/.481) and 2B Joe Sanders (.200/.262/.311) each had two hits.  Starter Josh Sullivan (6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K) pitched superbly, while Casey Weathers struck out three in 1.1 innings of relief to pick up the save.

Boise 7, Tri-City 6
Dust Devils: 10-17, 8 GB (2nd half)
W: Jordan Latham (1-1)
L: Brad McAtee (1-1)
SV: Steven Grife (1)

Edwar Cabrera allowed ten hits, six of them during a five-run second inning, but also struck out six and walked just one in six innings.  Cabrera's line this season has generally been a bit schizophrenic: despite strong K/9 (10.3) and BB/9 (2.4) and getting ground balls on 50% of balls in play, he's generally been pretty hittable, giving up more than a hit an inning.  While it would be easy to attach the blame to defense, fellow Tri-City starter Erik Stavert (with similar groundball rates) has been much better.  The Dust Devils came back and took the lead on the strength of two triples by LF Nathan Hines (.262/.330/.329) and 1B Mark Tracy's (.207/.286/.308) fourth homer of the season, but couldn't hold it as Boise scored two late runs to win.

Helena 6, Casper 2
Ghosts: 11-12, 3.5 GB (2nd half)
W: Tyler Thornburg (1-0)
L: Alejandro Barraza (1-6)

Helena's starter Tyler Thornburg held the Ghosts to one hit in five innings; that one hit was a fifth-inning homer by C Ryan Casteel (.311/.349/.403), his second of the season.  1B Jordan Ballard (.270/.315/.400) hit his third homer of the season two innings later to provide the Ghosts' only other run.  Casper starter Alejandro Barraza (5 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 5 K) struggled a bit and got almost no help from the offense.
