WINNER: USA (5 points)
RUNNER UP: ENGLAND (5 points)
TURNING POINT: Landon Donovan not once but twice -- leading the comeback against Slovenia with the first goal and a stoppage time winner against Algeria.
BEST MATCH: USA-Slovenia. Slovenia ran the show in the first half, but the USA fought back to bring the score to 2-2. Only a wrongly disallowed goal prevented the US from taking all three points. Proof to Americans that draws can be thrilling.
WORST MATCH: England - Algeria. In the running for among the 10 worst matches in World Cup history. The Guardian called it "comically unwatchable" and that was being nice. Proof to Americans that draws can be coma-inducing.
PLAYER OF THE GROUP: Landon Donovan. He carried his team when it needed him most.
BIGGEST NO-SHOW: Well, any ref in an American game. A goal unfairly disallowed against Slovenia, a goal unfairly ruled offside against Algeria -- the officiating was terrible. But the real flop of the group has to be Wayne Rooney. Hyped as the best striker in the world during the tournament run-in, he failed to score, failed to tally an assist, and combined with Steven Gerrard like he was still playing for Everton. A real disappointment so far.
