Infineon: Prerace Report

Polesitter: Jamie McMurray 77.521

1st Practice: Bobby Labonte 77.539

2nd Practice: Juan Pablo Montoya 77.591

3rd Practice: Denny Hamlin 78.219

Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson will start 41st and 42nd respectively after both the 24 and 48 cars failed tech inspection on Friday. Gordon is a five time winner at the Infineon Raceway and he was fast in both practices he participated in but he has his work cut out for him. No driver has ever won at Sonoma from farther back than 13th.

Columbian road racing veteran and former F1 star, Juan Pablo Montoya should feel right at home this week. Even though he's starting 32nd, you've got to like this guy's chances. He was fastest in second practice, running almost a full two seconds faster than his qualifying lap. Montoya had a really good car in race trim, also. Watch for Montoya to be a comer, not a goer today.

If there's a guy that's the hungriest for a road course win, it's road course ringer, Ron Fellows. He starts 11th in the number 96 Hall Of Fame Racing effort. He was fifth in opening practice and seventh in Happy Hour. His first time out in a COT car, Fellows said it was very difficult to drive, describing it as slippery. "We're trying to get it to where I can manage the track with the car and make as few mistakes as possible," he said. "If you can minimize your mistakes you're going to be better off and that's what we're trying to do." The car he is driving finished second last year at Infineon with Terry Labonte behind the wheel. Fellows will be a force to be reckoned with before the day is done.

The sun is out in California and it's shaping up to be an exciting one in the wine country. Enjoy your race day, everybody!
