Jamie McMurray Wins Bud Pole at Infineon

Jamie McMurray benefited from a cooler track later in the afternoon. He used it to best Robby Gordon and receive his first pole in almost two years Friday at Sonoma. McMurray clocked in at 1:17.521. He nervously waited out the series top qualifier, Ryan Newman and F1 star, Juan Pablo Montoya.

"I was a little nervous," McMurray said. "I felt like somebody could definitely run faster. I definitely felt with Juan and Ryan going out later, I would definitely get beat. I kept telling everybody that."

Gordon, who is considered to be one of the best road racers in NASCAR, settled for second with his 1:17.533 lap. Dale Earnhardt Jr. qualified the number 8 Bud car third. Boris Said and Tony Stewart rounded out the top five.

Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson will start 41st and 42nd. They were not allowed to qualify after they failed to pass tech inspection earlier on in the afternoon.

Driving for Michael Waltrip, Terry Labonte qualified the number 55 NAPA Chevrolet in the 25th position. His teammate, PJ Jones, who is in the 00 car this week for David Reutimann, will start 43rd.

Road course ringers litter the field. Along with Said and Jones, Ron Fellows, Marc Goosens and Butch Leitzenger will all race on Sunday.
