The Pit Stop

June 4, 2007 8:01 AM

Power Rankings: Dover

Rank Prev Number Driver Notes
3 Denny Hamlin Nine consecutive top 10s and he's led in eight of them. Saying this guy is due would be the understatemnt of the year.
1 Jimmie Johnson You know things are going your way when you start 21st, cut a tire, keep it off the wall and come home with a top 10 to maintain the points lead.
4 Tony Stewart Since wrecking at Talladega, he hasn't finished outside of the top 10. It's only a matter of time before Smoke is back in victory lane.
5 Matt Kenseth Another steady run at Charlotte. He has one of the best pit crews in the business. Always a plus if you want to tame the Monster.
2 Jeff Gordon Did his best baby mobile impression at Lowes. But he has 4 career wins at Dover and he's starting 6th. Oh, and it's a Car of Hendrick race.
12 Jamie McMurray If he can tame the Monster, Crown Royal is going to $250,000 to Autism Speaks. He's ran up front the past few weeks and he had the fastest car at Dover last spring. Jamie could do it.
7 Carl Edwards You've got to believe that all these dominating wins in the Busch series on Saturdays are eventually going to turn into Cup wins on Sundays.
9 Dale Earnhardt Jr. Nobody knows where Junior is going to wind up in 2008 but you can always count on him winding up running good at Dover. In his last 7 spring races at the Monster Mile, he has an average finish of 12.7 and has only finished outside of the top 10 once.
10 Jeff Burton He finished a lap down last week after getting collected in an early wreck but his crew adjusted the car nicely for the daylight to twilight transition and he held his position in the points standings. He won at Dover last fall and he has 6 top 5s and 10 top 10s there.
6 Kurt Busch He had a rough two weeks at Charlotte but this week, we're back to racing under the sunlight instead of the moonlight and Kurt says he has a top 10 ride.
8 Kyle Busch Like his big brother, Kyle was glad to put Charlotte in the rear view. He's starting 19th this week but he has a knack for going from the back to the front at Dover.
14 Mark Martin 7th fastest in first practice, qualified 21st, 6th fastest in Happy Hour. This is shaping up to be a patented Mark Martin race.
15 Ryan Newman Last seen hiding from Junior fans in his motor coach.
11 Kevin Harvick Delena told him he'd win the All-Star race and he did. Does that mean she told him he was going to wreck in the Coke 600?
16 Martin Truex Jr. He came from 25th to finish 11th at Darlington, went from 19th to a top 10 in the All-Star race after winning the Nextel Open, and went from 31st to 16th in the Coke 600 even though he lost his left front fender in the early going. If there was ever a driver on the verge of a break out race, it's Truex.
13 Clint Bowyer By the time he was done getting hit last week, his Chevrolet looked more like a Volkswagen.
19 Bobby Labonte Five consecutive top 20 finishes. Baby steps.
22 J.J. Yeley Spotted at a Charlotte Sunoco station bowing to a gas pump screaming "I'm not worthy!"
17 Greg Biffle Wrecked at Atlanta, wrecked at Martinsville, wrecked at Lowes. He's won at Dover before and he starts 10th but he wrecked three times in the Busch race yesterday.
22 David Stremme He finished 17th at Lowes. Not great but good for a driver trying to get back on the right track.
21 Elliott Sadler I wonder if he drove into that wreck on purpose just so he could spend more time with Jessica Alba.
NR Casey Mears His crew chief was overheard in the garage saying that that was the best damn steak he's ever had.
NR David Ragan Another guy that will have a breakout finish soon. Looked like he was going to do it last week. Had a good run going until he got collected in someone else's mess.
22 Juan Pablo Montoya This is what happens when you refuse to eat the hot dogs at Martinsville.
NR Michael Waltrip He made the race!
