Ryan Newman captured his third consecutive pole this week for the Pocono 500. Get used to hearing Denny Hamlin's name this weekend. He qualified second. Martin Truex Jr, fresh off of his first career win at Dover, qualified 3rd. Kyle Busch and Clint Bowyer rounded out the top 5.
Kurt Busch qualified 27th in a backup car after he wrecked his primary in first practice.
Chad McCumbee, driving the number 45 Petty Inc. car for Kyle Petty, qualified 37th. It will be McCumbee's first career Cup start. Petty is stepping out of the car to pursue an opportunity commentating for TNT. For the next six weeks, Petty will turn the car over to McCumbee and John Andretti.
Michael Waltrip failed to qualify. He hasn't qualified for back to back races yet this season. Like Waltrip, the cars of Kenny Wallace, Jeremy Mayfield, Kevin Lepage, Dale Jarrett and Mike Bliss will be put back on their haulers. They will not race on Sunday.
