Jeff Gordon steals Bud Pole at Michigan

You knew from the moment you saw Jeff Gordon last in the qualifying order that he was going to get the pole and that's exactly what he did. Gordon used the late draw to absolutely torch the competition and win his 6th pole of the season and the 62nd pole of his career.

Kasey Kahne held the pole for most of the session until Greg Biffle knocked him off. But Biffle's clutch on the pole was relinquished five minutes later when Gordon completed his run. Biffle and Kahne will start second and third respectively. Bobby Labonte and Elliott Sadler round out the top five.

The biggest story of the afternoon, though had to be Michael Waltrip Racing. Michael Waltrip, who has only made five races this year and David Reutimann both put together their best qualifying runs of the year. Waltrip qualified 11th and Reutimann qualified 12th. However, Dale Jarrett went out very early on in the session and failed to qualify. He will join Jeremy Mayfield, Paul Menard, Scott Wimmer, Johnny Sauter, Kevin Lepage and A.J. Allmendinger on the long road home.
