Dale Earnhardt Jr. needed a miracle today in order to get into the chase started the Chevy Rock and Roll 400 in 21st spot.  Jimmy Johnson and his teammate Jeff Gordon were on the front row.

In the first caution on lap 8 Tony Raines and Jeff Green spin out.  Getting a piece of this was Greg Biffle who wound up going behind the wall.  He stated that the axel housing was bent and that he was in the back with a bunch of “donkeys.”

Ryan Newman had the lead of the race during laps 30-63.

After the Scott Riggs accident on lap 63 we finally had a long green flag run that lasted until lap 132 when Joe Nemechek spun out.  The only leader in that time period was Jeff Gordon.  All the cars on the lead lap pit and Jeff keeps the lead of the lead of the race off pit road.

At lap 166 Carl Edwards finally had the lead of the race.  A few laps earlier hew started to complain that his car was finally going to blow up.  He changed ignition boxes in the car. 16 more laps go by and his car finally blows up.  “I was having a blast,” said Carl Edwards.  He also stated that some extremely important broke in the engine.

At the drop of the green flag Denny Hamlin had the lead of the race for a while until Jeff Gordon took the lead of the race again until Denny took the lead back. At the halfway point in the race Clint Bowyer in an attempt to take the lead of the race spins out.

The green flag drops and in a couple of laps Jeff Gordon takes over the race lead again with Tony Stewart moving up the field.  At lap 234 Kenny Wallace spins out.  The cars up front pit and

The first caution that brought out a red flag occurs on lap 242.  Ryan Newman spins out.  Getting some rear damage was Kurt Busch.  Winding up on fire was the car of Juan Pablo Montoya.  Juan quickly got of the car after it stopped.  Kevin Harvick at this point of time complains of an overheating problem.

The green flag drops at lap 251 and it was only seven laps later and Reed Sorenson spins out to bring out the caution.  Jeff Gordon leads the race at the drop of the green flag and gives up the lead to Tony Stewart at lap 271.

The second caution that brought out the red flag occurs on lap 293 for a multi-car accident that included Jamie McMurray, Dave Blaney, John Andretti, David Stremme, and Dale Jarrett.

After getting back to a yellow condition the leaders pit and Jimmy Johnson wins the lead of the race off pit road with Tony Stewart in second and Jeff Gordon in third.  With 75 laps to go nothing changed in the top three. With 65 laps to go Robby Gordon brings out the caution after blowing a tire.

Leaders pit this time and it is Jimmy Johnson in the lead with Jeff Gordon in second and Tony Stewart in third.  The green flag starts, but it quickly goes back to yellow as John Andretti and his car stalls ands smokes on the racetrack.

The green flag drops with fifty laps to go and Dale Jr. makes a quick move into second place.  With 37 to go Jeff Gordon took over second place. With 30 to go Tony Stewart in fourth made a move for second place and got it in three laps.  At 20 laps left Jimmy Johnson leads Tony Stewart by around 2 seconds.

With 8 laps left David Ragan got up behind Dale Jr. for fourth and in a couple laps his engine finally gave up. Jimmy Johnson then goes on and takes his second race in a row.

“We didn’t have the best car until the end,” said Jimmy Johnson.

Tony Stewart stated that he let one get away from him.  He finished in second place.

“Good solid run for us,” said Jeff Gordon who finished in fourth.  He stated that his battle with Dale Jr. wore his tires out.

“Just disappointment,” said Dale Jr.  He finished in 30th.

Kurt Busch stated that his car was a little loose at end of the race. He finished ninth.

With the chase participants set Jimmy Johnson now has a 20 point lead over Jeff Gordon and a 30 point lead over Tony Stewart.
