Jimmy closes gap to Gordon

The NASCAR Nextel driver made there way to Martinsville for the only short track stop during the chase. It is 500 laps today in the Subway 500.

Jeff Gordon won the poll for the race. He stated that he wanted to be smart and smooth. Clint Bowyer stated that his car was a lot better than we qualified.

The first 100 laps only saw a few caution flag waved. The biggest one came out on lap 92 as Scott Rigss got into Elliott Sadler. Also picking up some damage was David Ragan, Aric Almirola, and Reed Sorenson. The only one to lead a lap in this time period was Jeff Gordon.

In the next 100 laps Jimmy Johnson finally got the lead of the race at lap 110 then a caution came out a couple laps later for Aric Almirola and his smoking car. Other cars getting a chance to lead were Kyle Busch and Jeff Burton. During this time cars started to go off sequence for some pit strategy.

In the third 100 laps Kyle Busch did a lot of leading. At lap 258 J.J. Yeley brought out a caution as his car smoked big time. J.J stated that he felt a small vibration and that a small piston was a problem.

In the fourth 100 laps Jimmy Johnson stretched his fuel until a lap 342 for a caution of the Jeff Green car that hits the wall. He was around 15 laps before having to make a green flag pit stop. During the pit stops Jeff Gordon wound up with a fueling problem and did not get enough fuel in. The catch can dropped out which means you can’t add fuel to the car or wind up with a penalty.

With 106 laps left David Stremme Spins out to bring out the caution. The leaders including Jeff Gordon pit. Jeff Gordon wins the race off pit road with Ryan Newman in second.

The next caution came out for a spinning David Stremme. He stated that he had a rough day today.

With 65 laps to go Jimmy Johnson passes Ryan Newman for second place. Five laps later and Casey Mears and Martin Truex Jr. spin out. With 43 laps left Ricky Rudd goes into the wall to bring out the caution. One lap earlier Jimmy Johnson took the lead of the race.

At the drop of the green flag it did not take long and the caution came out as Martin Truex Jr. spins out Kyle Petty. With nowhere to go were Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards.

The next caution comes out with 24 to go with Martin Truex Jr. spinning out hitting Carl Edwards. The record tying 19th caution comes out with 16 laps to go as Bill Elliott blows up and leaves some oil out on the racetrack.

At the ten to go mark the green flag drops and in a couple of laps Ryan Newman retakes the second spot. The record setting caution comes out with five to go as Tony Raines spins outs Bobby Labonte. Also involved was Casey Mears.

The green/white checker comes out, David Ragan and his car his gets stuck at the bottom of the track bringing out the race ending caution. At the time the caution came out Ryan Newman was making a good move to go under Jimmy Johnson for the lead of the race.

“I think we had the best car today,” said Chad Knaus who is the crew chief for Jimmy Johnson.

Jimmy Johnson stated that he had the same stuff as Jeff Gordon and that he thought he had a great car.

“I really didn’t have anything for him(Jimmy),” said Jeff Gordon. He sated that his car was great on long runs and that he did not need all the cautions at the end of the race. He finished third.

“Battled back their at the end,” said Clint Bowyer who finished in ninth. He also stated that it was not his day.

In points Jeff Gordon and lead gets shaved down to 53 points from new second place driver in the points Jimmy Johnson. Clint Bowyer falls to third 115 points back.
