The Nextel Cup drivers came into the Checker Auto Parts 500 for some racing. Kyle Busch comes into today’s race with a chance to be the first driver in NASCAR history to win all three races in one weekend. Jimmy Johnson comes in the day with a 30-point lead over Jeff Gordon for the championship lead.
Jeff Gordon said that no way could he be conservative today in the race.
During the first 100 laps it was mainly the Carl Edwards show as he led the first 90 laps of the race. Only a few cautions popped up during that time. One caution for a David Gilliland spin, one for a Joe Nemechek spin, and one for debris.
At lap 106 Carl Edwards came into pit road with some massive car problems. “It’s frustrating,” said Carl Edwards. Hw would able to come back out on the track, but be many laps down.
At lap 107 the caution popped out for debris. The green flag dropped and then at lap 118 Dale Jr. spins out. “I just lost it,” said Dale.
At lap 138 Jacques Villeneuve spun out and getting some damage from his spin was Kasey Kahne.
A few laps go by and at lap 147 Kasey Kahne brings out the caution all by himself. “I drove like an idiot all day,” said Kasey Kahne.
This led the second long green flag run of the day where Matt Kenseth led all the way to his pit stop on lap 187 given Jimmy Johnson the lead of the race. Jimmy pitted with 93 laps left. Matt Kenseth finally got the lead back with 90 laps to go. At the 80 to go mark Dave Blaney spins out to finally bring out the caution.
Ryan Newman took only gas to take the lead of the race. Matt Kenseth was able to get around him in a couple laps to take the lead of the race.
With 69 laps to go Joe Nemechek brought out another caution as he spins out for the second time today.
With 50 laps left Matt Kenseth leads the race with Tony Stewart in second. Jeff Gordon in ninth is having a tire rub problems after getting into contact with the car of Kevin Harvick.
At 43 laps to go a debris caution comes out and all the leaders except Martin Truex Jr. come into pit. With 34 laps to go Matt Kenseth makes a pass on Jimmy Johnson for second. Four laps later Jimmy retakes second over Matt Kenseth.
With 24 laps left Jimmy Johnson makes the pass and takes the lead of the race and then started to pull out a one second lead on the field. With 7 laps to go Greg Biffle took over second place from Matt Kenseth. Greg could not make up ground and Jimmy wins his fourth race in a row. The last driver to win four in a row was Jeff Gordon in 1998.
“I give it all that I can,” Said Jimmy. He also stated that at Homestead he is going to go down there and be smart
“We just couldn’t get quite close enough,” said Greg Biffle. He also stated that with an extra 10 laps he could have been on his back bumper.
Matt Kenseth said he thought Jimmy was better. He finished in third spot.
“We had a good car,” said Tony Stewart. Tony finished in fourth.
"Alltel Dodge was pretty good," said Ryan Newman who finished in fifth.
“Those guys are on an unbelievable role, “ said Jeff Gordon. He also stated that it is over for the championship. On the Kevin Harvick stuff he said “It didn’t effect us” and that he was already falling back at that point of time.
Due to Jeff Gordon and his 10th place finish he is 86 points back of Jimmy Johnson. Clint Bowyer still in third place in the points falls back to 241 points and is out of the championship hunt.
