Earlier in the day Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the Nationwide series car that he is going qualify had the rear deck lid and the rear spoiler confiscated by NASCAR. Some illegal aerodynamic changes were made to the parts. After qualifying his car he said that he was disappointed with his team over this. He qualified the car in 21st spot today.
Getting the first poll of the year though was Tony Stewart with a speed of 180.937 MPH. Tony said that this car was fast. Sitting along side of him on the front row is Clint Bowyer. The 2007 champ starts in 27th spot.
After qualifying the times of Cale Gale, Johnny Sauter, David Gilliland and David Stremme got thrown out, but still make the race on owners points. Kertus Davis also gets his time thrown out, but does not make the race. All cars violated rule 20A-2.1L of the Nationwide Series rule book, which states that “Any device or duct work that allows air to pass from one area of the interior of the car to another, or to the outside of the car, will not be permitted.”
Replacing Kertus is Dwayne Leik.
Jacques Villeneuve is still looking for sponsorship for his team. ESPN Reports that Jacques Villeneuve will be replaced by someone like Mike Skinner if they have problems getting sponsorship for the race in California.
