The Pit Stop

February 15, 2009 11:56 PM

Matt Kenseth wins rain shortened race.

Martin Truex Jr. won the poll for the Daytona 500 while Jimmie Johnson starts the year going for his fourth championship in a row. Rain was the over the area earlier in the day making for a green race track and a competition yellow around lap 25.  Rain would come back later on in the race.

"It's the ultimate race," said Jeff Gordon.

At lap 8 the first caution of the day occurred for an Aric Almirola spin. This caution brought in most of the field for tires only.

At lap 26 the competition yellow finally came out.  Kyle Busch was able to lead the race off pit road.  During the next long green flag run Kyle Busch lost the lead to Dale Jr. who then lost the lead to Tony Stewart.  The caution finally came out on lap 55 for Travis Kvapil with tire problems.

Tony Stewart won the race off pit road and we had another good long green flag run where Jamie McMurray and Jeff Gordon at times were leading the race.  At lap 72 Ryan Newman wound up with a lengthy green flag pit stop as the jack did not work.  The caution came out at lap 80 as Greg Biffle helped Joey Logano crash hard into the inside wall.  "He(Scott Speed) checked up so much," said Joey.

Kyle Busch won the race off pit road and after the green flag dropped it got real wild around lap 90 for a few laps with many rows of three wide racing.  At the halfway point it was Kyle Busch as the leader.

With 87 laps left Jeff Gordon comes in for some tire issues, then with 85 laps left Jimmie Johnson comes in for tires.   At 82 laps to go David Stremme comes into the pit with an exploded rear tire and then the caution comes out for debris.  That put Jeff Gordon back on the lead lap.

During this pit stop it was Dale Jr. again with pit problems as he was outside his pit box during his pit stop.  Elliott Sadler had the lead at the restart of the race.

The green flag dropped with 77 laps to go, but it was not long before the big one occurs.  Brian Vickers went down to the yellow line, but behind him was Dale Jr. who did some blocking.  Dale then tags Vickers who then takes out Robby Gordon, Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Jamie McMurray, Scott Speed, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin, and Kurt Busch.

"Not real sure," said Kyle Busch on how the accident occurred.  Jamie McMurray said it looked like someone got spun out front.  "He(Dale Jr.) just turned us," Brian Vickers.  Brian also said that Dale wanted a caution really badly.  Dale Jr. said that he had great run on him. He also said that he was not thinking right.

After the green flag dropped it got a bit wild in the back after a few laps.  Jeff Burton winds up going high bottlenecking a bunch of cars in the back and then getting the worst if it was Paul Menard who then brings out the caution with 63 laps to go.  Getting back on the lead lap this time was Dale Jr.

With 55 laps to go Matt Kenseth got the lead of race and then it was Kasey Kahne and Aric Almirola getting together to bring out the next caution.  The leaders stayed out during this caution.  Then the rain finally came out hard enough to bring out the track driers with 48 laps left in the race and then the red flag pooped up.

"It's unbelievable," said Matt Kenseth who finally won the race at 6:49pm when the race got called for rain.  He led a total of one green flag lap.

A.J. Allmendinger said that he had a chance to win the race if went green.

"Obviously would have liked to get back to green," said Tony Stewart. He said his car was better than eighth place.
