The Pit Stop

May 24, 2009 4:15 AM

Mike Bliss steals the race.

Rain fell on the track right before the start of the Carquest Auto parts 300. The start of the race was delayed for over an hour as track drying had to occur.

"I don't know what we got," said Joey Logano.  "Car drives pretty good," said Dale Jr.  "The car is very very fast," said Greg Biffle.

"Just take our time," said Kyle Busch when asked about getting to the front.

Qualifying for the race though went with no problems and Carl Edwards won the poll for the race.  Kyle Busch who started in second had to go to the rear due to an engine change.

The race started under the green/yellow and full speed racing did not occur until lap 7.  On this lap Kyle Busch passed over 15 cars.  The first caution on the day came on lap 23 for Michael Annett who spun out.   By this time it was Kyle Busch in the 10.

"I'm fine," said Michael Annett.

Everyone went done pit road, but some cars only took on two tires.  Carl Edwards won the race off pit road while Kyle Busch came off fifth.

After the green flag dropped it took until lap 41 before Kyle Busch passed Carl Edwards took the lead of the race.  Then it was Carl Edwards slowly dropping back and out of the top ten.  Kyle though busting out more fast laps and moved up to an over three second lead.

At lap 76 green flag pit stops started to occur with Kyle Busch coming in at lap 86.  Four more laps go by, which was the end of green flag stops, Justin Allgaier spins out to bring out the caution.

This led to another long green flag run where Kyle Busch was leading more and more laps. Carl Edwards during this green flag run was only able to slowly move up the field this time. Around lap 119 it was Greg Biffle though into pit road to replace a flat tire.  At lap 138 it was Brian Vickers having the quicker car and passing Kyle Busch at lap 141.

Green flag stops started again at lap 145 with Brian Vickers coming in soon after.  With 50 laps left Steven Wallace spun out around pit road, but did not bring out the caution.  Kevin Hamlin though on the same lap did smack into the wall to bring out the caution.

This left Mike Bliss the only car on the lead lap before Brendan Gaughan got the lucky dog pass.  Mike Bliss though had to pit which put 10 extra cars on the tail end of the lead lap.

With 39 laps left the green flag finally dropped.  A couple laps go by and it was side by side fight for the lead of the race with Brendan Gaughan getting the lead with 35 laps left.  Then on the next lap Bliss too the lead back.

With 32 laps left the rain came back to bring out the caution.  Dale Jr. got the lucky dog leaving 13 cars on the lead lap.  With 30 laps left the cars were brought down pit road to get the track driers out as the red flag came out.

The cars were about to leave pit road after ten minutes on pit road and then rain started to come down on turn 2 stopping all cars from leaving pit road.  At 11:27 PM Mike Bliss was finally called the winner of the race as rain really started to fall on the track big time.

"We had great fuel mileage," said Mike Bliss.

After the race was over Kyle Busch extends his lead over Carl Edwards to 73 points.
