The newly repaved Pocono track saw a smashed qualifying record as Joey Logano qualified his car at 179.598 MPH which is around 7 MPH greater than the poll speed Kasey Kahne had back in 2004. The track also saw a whole mess load of speeding penalties today.
The green flag dropped and it only took until turn three before the first caution came out as Landon Cassill spins out and then hits the Martin Truex Jr. in just the right spot to completely remove the passenger side door panel. A.J. Allmendinger also wound up with some damage from this wreck.
The green flag dropped again at lap six and we had another short green flag run with Joey Logano leading more laps. The next caution finally came out on lap 13 as J.J. Yeley, Reed Sorenson, and Tony Raines wreck in turn three.
This caution brought a bunch of cars down pit road for service with Clint Bowyer getting a pit road speeding penalty. Some cars stay out though and Jamie McMurray got to lead laps as the race restarted. Cars that did not pit started to pit at lap 33. This put Dale Earnhardt Jr. into the lead of the race. More cars finally pitted around lap 45. Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson wound up getting a speeding penalty this time. At lap 49 David Ragan got a speeding penalty on pit road.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. was getting hot and chasing down the leader at this time that was Denny Hamlin. At lap 60 it was Dale Jr. getting the lead of the race. At lap 65 Denny Hamlin ran out of fuel as he was about to make it to pit road. Than at lap 66 the caution came out for A.J. Allmendinger that wrecked his car. By this time over 10 driver picked up a penalty on pit road.
The caution brought in the leaders and after the pit stops were done Jamie McMurray was in the race lead. This was only a short green flag run and at lap 74 the caution came out for David Ragan and his tire problem.
The caution though brought in a couple cars including Kasey Kahne and Jame McMurray in for service. During the caution time on lap 77 Kyle Busch took his car behind the garage. After the green flag dropped Matt Kenseth gets hot and takes over the race lead on lap 93. Then during the set of green flag pit stops Juan Pablo Montoya and Joey Logano got to lead laps.
At lap 110 Dale Jr. finally got to lead the race again. The caution finally came out at alp 124 as the engine finally gave out on the Greg Biffle car. The leaders pit and Joey Logano wins the race off pit road. After the race restarted Joey got to lead more laps. The caution comes out with 24 laps left as Kasey Kahne smacks the wall hard. The caution brought in some cars down pit road including Dale Jr. and Jeff Gordon. Other cars stay out hoping to making all the way on fuel.
The race restarts and Joey Logano is back leading laps as Mark Martin gets second. The caution comes out at lap 149 for debris. With 8 laps left the race restarts and Mark Martin gets the race lead. With 4 laps left Joey logano was able to go the inside and retake the lead of the race. He was able to have enough gas and go on to win the race. The win was the first one in the past 31 races to be won by the pole sitter.
"Clear air is worth so much," said Joey Logano. "You don't know how much this means" he stated on this win.
"What a great race team," said Mark Martin. His second place finish marked his seventh at this track and he still has no wins at this place.
Tony Stewart stated that this was a great rebound from the past couple of weeks.
Dale Jr. stated that he just did not want to run out of gas and that he did not know how long the caution flags were going to be. He finished the race in eighth place.
