MiLB opening day...

Derek Fanfest.JPGThe season is set to start today across the minor leagues.  Two of my favorite pitchers will be taking the hill tonight as Derek Holland (pictured left) goes for the Hawks and Blake Beavan takes the hill in Frisco.  It will be my first time seeing Derek pitch in a Hawks uniform since last year we started on the road and he was called up on the day of his first home start.  I have to admit if it was anyone other than Derek starting today, I would be tempted to skip it.  Thursday = drunk night and it is going to be cold to boot.  Drunks on a cold night just doesn't sound fun to me.  A couple hours North East of OKC, the Tulsa Drillers will open at their new sold out ballpark.  The game is a sellout.  I can't remember the last time there was a sellout in Tulsa.  I believe Frisco is close to a sellout today as well, but tickets remain for the Hawks.

As I tweeted earlier, we haven't even played our first game and we already have a transaction.  Catcher Matt Treanor was called up to Texas after Jarod Saltalamacchia went on the DL with upper back stiffness.  The Rangers are not happy with Salty for not telling them about his back issues, which occurred on Monday, earlier than after yesterday's game.  A move will have to be made to add Treanor to the 40-man roster.  Jeff speculated, and I agree, that the likely move is Omar Poveda, who had season ending surgery, to the 60-day DL.  I expect Emerson Frostad, who according to Jeff was with the team at media day on Monday, to be our backup catcher.  However, Chris Gradoville is now missing from the Frisco roster so I suppose he is also a possibility.  The other new name to the roster, again per Jeff, was Andy Jenkins who apparently is as versatile as they come.

If you are interested, the Daily Oklahoman has the usual stories on opening day, best RedHawks, changing affiliation etc.  I'm not going to link to each, but here is a link to the main Newsok RedHawks page.

Ex-RedHawk Ryan Roberts was optioned to Reno (Az).  My alleged 2007 favorite RedHawk, Tug Hulett, was optioned to the Paw Sox.  The Rockies released ex-Hawk Rick Bauer and perennial PCLer Chris Gissell.  The Tigers released good guy and ex-Hawk Sam Narron.  The Marlins added ex-Hawks Jose Veras and Mike Lamb to their 40-man roster.  Ex-Hawk Marcus Thames was added to the MFYs active roster.  Royce's little brother Chad Huffman was DFA'd by the Padres and claimed by the MFYs.

I'll try to post a couple of twitter updates tonight from the game if I think of it.  You can follow me @YoungGunsMiLB.  See ya at the park!
