Baseball is sport of consistency and repetitiveness. It is full of certainties, events and occurrences to which you can practically set your watch.
Mariano Rivera pitching with robot-like effectiveness. Cubs fans welcoming a new year with enthusiasm and hope, only to wave goodbye in September with disappointment and heartbreak. The Yankees spending gobs of money. Milton Bradley getting suspended at least once (hey, right on cue!). Adam Dunn hitting 40 home runs. Columnists getting upset about the MVP and/or Cy Young races. The list goes on and on.
But do not think that baseball is simply a sport of mundane predictability. Quite the contrary, in fact. Baseball offers something new and different, seemingly on a weekly basis. With 162 games and 30 teams, a surprise is always one pitch, one hit, one out away, and the 2009 season has been no exception.
From Zack Greinke’s remarkable season, to yet another playoff push by the Colorado Rockies, to the New York Mets' embarrassment of a year, the Top 10 2009 MLB Surprises have left even the sharpest prognosticators humbled and scratching their heads.
