No matter the sport, winning three consecutive World Cups is an incredible feat that requires nearly a decade of top-level play. It has not been done in soccer, rugby or basketball. The treble has only been accomplished once in cricket, by the Australian team of 1999-2007.
The Aussies lost the 1996 final to Sri Lanka, afterwards selecting separate sides for Test Matches and One Day Internationals. The adjustment worked and although they started slowly in 1999, they eventually found their game, winning the finals fairly easily over Pakistan. After their victory the Aussies only got better, not losing a match during the 2003 World Cup. In the finals Ricky Pointing helped them to set a record for runs in a one-day cricket match, winning over India by a World Cup-record margin of 125 runs.
Australia defended its unbeaten streak in the 2007 World Cup, running it to 29 straight World Cup matches without a loss. By comparison, the second longest streak is only nine. By the end of the 2007 triumph, though, the team was aging and the Aussies' dominance finally came to an end with a loss in the quarterfinals of the 2011 World Cup.
