When you get touted as "the next Gretzky" it's fair to say there is a lot of hype around you.
After amassing 137 points in only 53 games during the 1992/93 season with the Victoriaville Tigres of the Quebec Major Junior League, Alexandre Daigle was the can't-miss prospect who was selected #1 overall in the 1993 NHL Draft by the Ottawa Senators. The Senators were even accused of deliberately losing games in order to get the top pick and nab Daigle.
After getting drafted Daigle said, "I'm glad I got drafted first, because no one remembers number two." Unfortunately for Daigle in this draft many more people would remember number two (Chris Pronger) than would remember him. What Daigle is remembered for is being a bust.
At the time of his signing he received the largest starting salary in league history (five-year, $12.25 million) and never earned anywhere close to what he was paid. Daigle spent four and a half seasons in Ottawa before they traded him away. He continued to bounce around the league before leaving the game of hockey in 2000. Two years later Daigle decided to return to the NHL, but by 2006 was in the AHL and since has moved on to play in Switzerland.
