Over the weekend, four teams cut down the nets and their coaches and players proudly wore the nylon around their necks, signifying their advancement to the Final Four. Next Monday, one team will get to do it all over again, this time to celebrate winning the national championship.
Cutting down the nets is a unique tradition in college basketball, but it's hardly the only one in the wide world of sports. At some events, the organizers think up interesting ways to fete their winners and thus brand their competition. At others, it's the athletes who get inspired with a certain celebratory routine and as it gets copied by subsequent winners, it becomes a ritual all its own.
