Arizona was the most dominant team in softball from 1993-1996. The Wildcats won the title in three of those four seasons and would’ve won them all if it weren’t for Pac-10 rival UCLA, which beat them in the 1995 title game. But the record books don’t show that the Bruins won in 1995 because they were stripped of their title.
UCLA’s star pitcher that season was Australian Tanya Harding, who went 17-1 and pitched all four Women's College World Series victories for the Bruins. Harding was only at UCLA from mid-season until the end of the postseason, returning to Australia without completing even one quarter of school work.
On top of Harding’s case, UCLA also had three players on soccer scholarships in an effort to circumvent the limit on the softball team. That Arizona team still fumes that it didn’t have a shot at a four-peat thanks to the rule-breaking Bruins. For its actions, the entire UCLA athletic program was put on three years' probation.
