Arkansas' dominance of track and field makes the Razorbacks in the running for the greatest program in collegiate history of any sport. With over 40 national championships they are by far the most successful track and field program in the country, but they make this list not for the championships they have but rather for the two they do not.
When the Razorbacks hired Lance Brauman from Barton County Community College in Kansas to be their new sprint coach, he brought his star athlete Tyson Gay with him. Brauman was later found guilty of embezzlement, theft and mail fraud during his time at Barton. It was also found that he provided Gay with improper transportation, lodging, and correspondence course assistance.
Although the violations themselves were not outrageous Arkansas had already faced sanctions from the NCAA many times for football and basketball violations and was accordingly sanctioned as a repeat offender. Because he was thus deemed ineligible, all of Gay’s results were vacated, as well as the two national titles the men’s outdoor track team won with Gay in 2004 and '05.
