Sports are added to the Olympics each year.  This year, for example, BMX riding was added. And each year, some events are removed. Baseball and softball will not be in the 2012 Olympics.  This graph depicts the total number of medals awarded each Olympics.  This is not the same as the number of events in each Olympics, as some events award multiple bronze medals, and some events have awarded only two medals.

Most years the number of medals awarded has increased, although there are exceptions: 1912, 1924, 1928, and 1960.
