In 1983, Lute Olson took over an Arizona team that had gone 4-24 the previous season. He won 11 games his first season and the following year began a streak of 23 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances*. He retired in 2007 and the streak ran to 25 consecutive tournament appearances before it was snapped in 2010 following a 16-15 season under the helm of Sean Miller.

Arizona is often referred to as Point Guard U because of the talent at that position that has made it to the NBA. Steve Kerr, Mike Bibby, Gilbert Arenas, Damon Stoudamire and Jason Terry are among the point guards from Arizona that have had success in the pros. But recently it’s been bigger players that have thrived in the pros including Channing Frye, Richard Jefferson and Andre Iguodala. Forward Derrick Williams is expected to be taken in the top three in this year’s draft to continue that trend.

*1999 appearance was vacated because of sanctions.
