Top 10 Biggest Conference Shake-Ups
College athletics as we know it is changing before our eyes. Nebraska has joined the Big Ten, Colorado has joined the Pac-10 and that’s just the tip of the iceberg of what is expected to come in the next few weeks.
Of course, the changes are all driven by the all-mighty dollar. The Big Ten made the move to create its own cable channel and its members are reaping the rewards. The Big Ten is able to pay out over $20 million to each of its members because of its TV revenue and it’s looking to expand its reach regardless of how many other conferences it could potentially ruin.
The Pac-10 has followed suit and is looking to expand as well in hopes of creating its own television channel. With these two conferences making power plays to expand and increase revenue, the entire college football system looks to be going through an upheaval like we’ve never seen before.
Some are predicting four major conferences of 16-20 teams each that would basically be divided into East, West, North and South. It’s looking less likely that will happen, for now, with the news that Texas has turned down the invitation to the Pac-10 and will stay in what is left of the Big 12. But all the dominos have yet to fall and who knows what the college football landscape will look like in a couple of years.
When it comes to realignment, many fans consider it sacrilege. Nebraska will no longer play Oklahoma or Missouri? Cornhusker fans have to get excited for their budding rivalry with the likes of Michigan and Ohio State now. But this isn’t the first time college football has made major changes and it certainly won’t be the last. Here’s a look at the Top 10 Biggest Conference Shake-Ups.
