The Run for the Roses (that would be the Kentucky Derby, kids ... a horse race!) is scheduled to take place Saturday. Once upon a time, it was an event that had the attention of both rabid and casual fans, with Daily Racing Form clutched in one hand and a mint julep in the other. Now, can you even name one horse that's in the field?
And the Penn Relays (that's a bunch of track races, run by humans!) came and went last weekend. Did you catch that? Of course not, but bet you didn't miss the NFL Draft during the same period, even though that's just a bunch of guys sitting in front of computers and telephones in a theater!
In an increasingly crowded sporting landscape and heightened media attention, some events are losing their luster and importance. There was a time when boxing, bowling and horse racing ranked much higher on our radar. Even in sports that are spectacularly popular, such as football and basketball, there are events that at one time possessed much more prestige and commanded more respect than they do today.
For various reasons, we now have better things to do than to pay attention to certain action that used to enrapture our parents and grandparents. It's a sign of the times. And these are the Top 10 Diminished Sporting Events:
