The Australian Open isn’t held in such high esteem as the other three tennis majors and many of the top talent avoided the event due to travel or scheduling reasons for many years. But that shouldn’t diminish Serena Williams’ dominance Down Under.
Serena has had an interesting history with the Australian Open. She won her first title in 2003, defeating her sister Venus, with whom she won the doubles title in the same event. In 2004 she had to withdraw from the event due to a knee injury but bounced back to win the title the following year.
Then, in 2007 many questioned her work ethic and further doubts were cast when she lost in the quarterfinals in a tune-up for the event. Williams was unseeded and ranked 81st in the world but proved doubters wrong in one of her most dominant performances ever in the finals. She destroyed top-seeded Maria Sharapova, 6-1, 6-2.
After a quarterfinals loss in 2008 she bounced back to win back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010. Her fifth title lifted her past Evonne Goolagong Cawley, Monica Seles and Steffi Graf, who each had four Australian Open titles in the Open Era. Andre Agassi and Roger Federer led the men with four titles apiece.
