During the 1980s it became commonplace to see Martina Navratilova hoist the Rosewater Dish above her head after winning Wimbledon. From 1978 to 1990 the Czechoslovakian-born lefty won 9 women’s singles titles - including six in a row from 1982 to 1987. With her ninth win she surpassed Helen Wilis’ record of eight Wimbledon titles, and as it stands it's two more than the top man Pete Sampras.

Navratilova was best known for her serve-and-volley power game and stringent exercise regimen. That dedication to her body allowed her to defy age and not only win her ninth Wimbledon singles title at 33 years old but win her fourth mixed doubles title at 46 years old in 2003. Between singles, doubles and mixed doubles Navratilova won an astounding 20 titles in London, making her by far the most dominant player in history on grass.
