It’s the moment all pro football players work for. All the time put into two-a-days, OTAs, and gridiron battles are all in hopes that at the end of the season, they will be rewarded by earning the chance to hoist the Lombardi Trophy after a Super Bowl victory.

Originally named the World Championship Game Trophy, its name was changed to the Lombardi Trophy in 1970 after legendary coach Vince Lombardi’s sudden passing from cancer. The trophy, which is sterling silver, is made by Tiffany & Co., and after the Super Bowl, the winning team’s name, date, and score of the game are engraved.

The Lombardi trophy has become much more iconic in recent seasons, because of the presentation of the award. For years the trophy was presented in the locker room, but starting with Super Bowl XXX, it has been given on the field. Since then the shots of the star player hoisting the trophy into the air with confetti pouring down has been as much a Super Bowl tradition as his proclaiming, “I’m going to Disneyland!”
