It’s St. Patrick’s Day, which means if you haven’t already skipped out on work to sneak over to the bar, you’re thinking about how you can skip out on work and sneak over to the bar.

This holiday, which began in part to honor St. Patrick, has transformed itself into an international celebration that features green, parades, and some imbibing of the adult beverages. But more than anything else, it’s the one day a year when everyone is Irish, perhaps hoping to capture some of their ironically famous luck, even if for just a single day.

One place where luck often plays a part is the world of sports. St. Patrick’s day or not, there are  countless stories of once-in-a-lifetime lucky plays, circus-like lucky shots, lucky calls and yes, even lucky injuries. Luck seems to follow these certain fortunate few. As for the rest of us -- if we can’t score the pot of gold, we’ll settle for a few pints of Guinness.
