Keith Van Horn
The current unemployment rate in the United States is around 8%. There are many people willing to take lower wages, work longer hours, or take jobs they don’t care about. Surely none of those people want to hear about Keith Van Horn, and we're not even talking about how he signed a 6-year, $73-million contract in 1999. At least then he was working for his money. But last year, Van Horn earned $4.3 million -- because he was lazy.
Van Horn stopped playing basketball after the 2006 season -- we can't say "retired," because he never actually filed his paperwork. This little loophole made it possible for the Mavericks to sign Van Horn (whom they still had the rights to) and then complete their trade for Jason Kidd. Van Horn earned $4.3 million, and didn’t have to play a single minute for the Nets last season. A pretty lucky gig, if you can get it.
