The Hawks look to have jumped up to the elite level in the East. It was assumed that the Hawks would be a little better than last year, but not able to challenge the big three in the East. At the midway point it appears that the Hawks have every bit as good of a shot as the Cavs, Celtics, and Magic. The addition of Jamal Crawford has helped the Hawks find a consistent offensive game to go with their defense. In terms of record they are half a game up on the Magic, and close enough to make a run at the Cavs and Celtics.
Ready to Breakout vs. Reality: Al Horford has improved his numbers slightly, but he is still not quite on that double-double pace. His offensive efficiency has certainly gotten better though, with an improved field goal percentage and points per game.
Over the Hill vs. Reality: Mike Bibby is slowing down as expected. With Jamal Crawford in the mix, Bibby is getting seven minutes less action per game and his scoring has dropped by 5.5 ppg.
Worst Moment: From December 29 to January 4, the Hawks followed up back to back losses to the Cavs with losses to the Knicks and Heat.
Best Moment: Playing the Celtics. The Hawks are 3-0 against Boston this year and hope to meet them in the second round of the playoffs.
Best Case Scenario: The Hawks are still young, but they have the chance to get hot during the playoffs and make a run to the NBA Finals, but they probably don’t have what it takes to win it all quite yet.
Worst Case Scenario: The Hawks end up the four seed and fall in the first round to a team that gets hot at the right time.
