Preseason Preview

The Nuggets are in nearly the same place they were last season. They’re exactly what everyone expected. They will compete for the two-seed in the West but must learn to win on the road to have a chance in the playoffs. They’re 19-3 at home but just 9-11 on the road. Carmelo Anthony is averaging a career-high in points while still playing solid defense. They are a physically imposing team while still being able to run. J.R. Smith’s production coming off the bench is one of the biggest keys to the Nuggets’ success this season. When he shoots over 50 percent from the field the Nuggets are 8-1.

Ready to Breakout vs. Reality: Aaron Afflalo’s numbers are up across the board and the Nuggets might want to think about giving him some of J.R. Smith’s minutes. Sure, J.R. Smith is a much more dynamic scorer but he’s also much more erratic. The Nuggets should use Afflalo more as he’s a more selective shooter who also plays solid defense.

Over the Hill vs. Reality: Kenyon Martin is still as athletic as ever and is showing it in his rebounds. But his shooting percentage is down significantly and that’s hurting the Nuggets.

Worst Moment: On November 29, they were beat by the Timberwolves. The win snapped a 15-game losing streak for Minnesota. Also, the game was played in Denver where the Nuggets have one of the best home records in the league.

Best Moment: On November 13, they creamed the Lakers 105-79. The Lakers were without Gasol but nonetheless the Nuggets held them to just 23 points in the second half. It snapped the Lakers six-game winning streak and perhaps more importantly showed that Ron Artest can’t guard Anthony one-on-one.

Best Case Scenario: They get back to the Western Conference Finals and this time beat the Lakers thanks to an amazing defensive effort by Chris Andersen and Nene shutting down Gasol and Bynum.

Worst Case Scenario: They fall to the three-seed and are ousted in the Conference semifinals by a veteran Mavericks team.
