The Nets were supposed to be bad – but not record-setting bad. They are currently on pace for just six wins. That would smash the previous low of nine wins set by the 1972-73 76ers. Despite their awful record, there have been some bright spots. Brook Lopez has been playing like an All-Star. He leads the Nets in points, rebounds, and blocks. Yi Jianlian has also played well since returning from injury after missing the first 28 games.
Ready to Breakout vs. Reality: Brook Lopez has been amazing. He has significantly increased in each major statistical category and is the one bright spot for the Nets.
Over the Hill vs. Reality: Rafer Alston was bought out of his contract and has since re-signed with the Heat. Alston had his moments but he shot 34% while with the Nets. Clearly the Nets didn’t think he was helping their cause.
Worst Moment: Nets broke the record for most losses in a row to start a season when they lost their 18th straight against the Mavericks on December 2.
Best Moment: Just two days later they got their first win of the season, beating the Bobcats 97-91.
Best Case Scenario: They finish the season better than it started but still have a bad enough record to increase their chances of the top pick and a chance at John Wall.
Worst Case Scenario: They set the record for worst season in NBA history and have no luck in the lottery and wind up with the fourth pick in the draft.
Trade Target: At this point, Brook Lopez is the only player that’s safe on the Nets. Everyone else is expendable for the right price.
