The Magic started the season 17-4 and looked like all their offseason moves had made them the far and away favorites in the East. But since then they have gone just 9-11. The Magic need to find a way to get Dwight Howard involved on the offensive end from start to finish. Right now they rely on the 3-ball far too much, shooting two more three pointers per game than the next team (the Knicks). In Howard the Magic have an unrivaled physical force. They need to use that force, not just from time to time, but throughout each game from start to finish, on both ends of the floor. If the Magic can keep Howard involved in the entire game they have as good of a shot as anyone to win it all.
Ready to Breakout vs. Reality: Mikael Pietrus has been nearly identical to last season. He is still a strong defender, but his three-point shooting and overall offensive numbers haven’t improved. JJ Redick has improved more than anyone on the Magic, shooting 40% from three and raising his assists and points per game.
Over the Hill vs. Reality: Jason Williams is doing about as well as could be expected after a year off. Williams is able to run the offense and give Jameer Nelson a breather from time to time. White Chocolate still gets over four assists a game and shoots 40% from beyond the arc.
Worst Moment: From January 2 to January 8 the Magic lost four straight to lesser Eastern Conference teams, the Bulls, Pacers, Raptors (at home), and Wizards. The Magic cannot afford these types of slip-ups if they hope to replicate last season’s success.
Best Moment: In the midst of winning 11 of 12 games the Magic went to Boston on November 20 and beat a completely healthy Celtics team.
Best Case Scenario: The Magic are as talented as any other team. If they can turn things back around and play like they have shown they are capable of, they can win it all.
Worst Case Scenario: The Magic don’t play up to their potential, end up as the fourth seed in the East and get bounced in the first round.
