When the NFL Scouting Combine was centrally relocated to Indianapolis in the early 1990s, the media contingent consisted of about a dozen writers. For the 2011 combine, the NFL issued a record 715 press credentials.
But the presence of the media horde only underscores the transformation of the combine, which is now of monster importance to the 32 NFL teams that must make critical decisions based on the tests and evaluations performed during the weeklong event. Every sprint, every shuffle, every vertical leap, every Wonderlic exam and every drug test will be scrutinized and dissected to its finest detail. As for the potential draftees, one bad stumble could end up costing millions of dollars.
There are those who came to Indy as relative unknowns but walked away as can't-miss prospects after an out-of-this-world type of workout. Sometimes these test results could be revelations, but at other times they were merely deceiving. Sometimes a team uncovered a gem, at other times it ended up with a workout warrior whose pure speed/strength/smarts turned out to be of no real value on the football field.
Regardless of how they turned out as pros, these are our Top 10 NFL Combine Performers of All-Time.
