The pistol shooting competition is the first event in the modern pentathlon. Today's competitors shoot 20 shots with 4.5mm air pistol at a stationary target 10m away. In 1912, competitors, usually armed with a 22-caliber pistol, shot at a turning target from at 25m away.

In practice the day before the shooting competition, using the .38 Colt Special pictured above, Patton nearly shot a perfect score -- 197 out 200 -- which would've been a record. He was widely considered the favorite in the event, and if not for coming in 21st in the event, may have won gold in the overall competition.
