3. The Band Is Out On the Field!

"The ball is still loose as they get it to Rodgers! They get it back now to the 30, they’re down to the 20 …. Oh, the band is out on the field! He’s gonna go into the end zone! He’s gone into the end zone!! ... And the Bears, the Bears have won! The Bears have won! Oh, my God! The most amazing, sensational, dramatic, heart-rending, exciting, thrilling finish in the history of college football! California has won the Big Game!"

In what was perhaps the most dramatic ending to any college football game ever played, it seems appropriate that the call was as tremendous as 'The Play' itself. After a Stanford field goal gave the Cardinal the lead with 4 seconds left in the 1982 Big Game, only a miracle could save Cal.

What happened next is the stuff of legends and has been forever immortalized by Joe Starkey’s famous call. A Stanford squib kick followed by a series of Cal laterals left the Golden Bears’ Kevin Moen free of all the Cardinal defenders as he streaked down the field; however, one final obstacle remained. As Moen dashed toward the end zone, he was forced to weave his way in and out of the Stanford band, which had taken the field to celebrate the impending Cardinal victory. Moen bowled over trombonist Gary Tyrrell in the end zone to give Cal the astonishing win.

In the end, the combination of 'The Play' and Starkey’s memorable call truly makes this one of “the most amazing, sensational, dramatic, heart-rending, thrilling” finishes in the history of college football.
