In the movie Happy Gilmore, Adam Sandler’s character takes a unique approach to golf. He’d run up to the tee and unload on the ball, sending it flying farther than any of the other professionals. His arch-nemesis Shooter McGavin attempts the technique but can’t even make contact with the ball. Sure, it’s just a movie (a great one) but it was also tested on the television show Sports Science and its tests showed the running start increased distance by 30 yards. Unfortunately, accuracy suffered significantly and you won’t soon see Tiger Woods running up to the tee.
While Gilmore’s unique approach was fictional, there have been plenty of examples of athletes trying something different and succeeding. Some of these new approaches have caught on to become the norm, while others have only worked for a very small number of people. Here are the Top 10 Successful Sports Oddities.
