The Dolphins undefeated season in 1972; Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak; the Lakers winning 33 straight games in 1971-72; streaks in sports have always fascinated both fans and the media. The Colts have won 20 straight regular season games and are just one short of the Patriots record, who did it over the course of three seasons (2006-2008), and both they and the Saints have a chance to complete perfect seasons.
But while winning streaks are fun to follow, there’s also the morbid curiosity involved in losing streaks. On Sunday, the Nets fired coach Lawrence Frank after beginning the season 0-16. They spared Frank the embarrassment of tying the record for worst start to an NBA season that night against the Lakers, and now the Nets are just one game away from setting that dubious mark.
A recent study showed that negative emotions are key in enjoying sports. It’s an obvious conclusion, but something people tend to forget about. When the Red Sox won the World Series for the first time in 86 years in 2004, their fans were ecstatic. The amount of joy they received was much greater than a team like the Yankees that win a quarter of the time. So, there’s the tiny silver lining for Nets fans. And for everyone else, enjoy watching a team flounder while the late night talk show hosts take daily jabs at them.
From missed free throws, to futile beginnings, to decade long losing streaks, we present the Top 10 Worst Streaks in Sports.
