Rae Carruth was a first round draft pick of the Carolina Panthers in 1997, a wide receiver out of Colorado. Carruth’s career started promising enough, but an injury caused him to miss most of his second season, and then he made sure his NFL career would never be a success. Carruth conspired to commit murder - on his pregnant girlfriend.

On November 16, 1999, Carruth stopped his car in front of the woman he had been dating, Cherica Adams. At that time, another car pulled alongside of Adams’ vehicle and the passenger shot her four times. Carruth and the assailants fled the scene.

At the time of the attack, Adams was eight-months pregnant with Carruth’s child, which turned out to be twins. The doctors were able to save one child, but Adams and the other twin both died. Carruth paid his bail and then fled the state.

Carruth was not hard to find, however. He was found hiding in the trunk of a car parked outside a motel in Tennessee. In the trunk with Carruth was $3,900 in cash, bottles to hold Carruth's urine, extra clothes, candy bars, and a cell phone.

Carruth was not convicted of first-degree murder; however, he was found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and using an instrument to destroy an unborn child. He is currently serving an 18 to 24-year sentence.
