From 1968 until 1987, Hal McRae played in the major leagues, mostly as a designated hitter. He retired with a .290 lifetime batting average and was a three-time All-Star. But few remember him for hitting and throwing a baseball as much as they do for him throwing a telephone into a wall (the result of which cut a reporter’s face) while in the process of destroying his office.
The outburst came after a 5-3 loss in the middle of April – we’d hate to see him after a close defeat in the World Series.
Before Blowup: 7-12
