The just-concluded Rose Bowl game saved the bowl season. An epic duel between USC and Penn State ended with the Trojans winning, 52-49, on a 46-yard field goal as time expired. The Nittany Lions had stormed back from an early 13-0 deficit by scoring a touchdown on seven consecutive possessions, only to see USC score the game's final 17 points in the game's last eight minutes.
