Just four days before the 75th anniversary of the stadium, a 500-pound concrete beam fell and obliterated seat 7 in the second row of Section 22. The Yankees were scheduled to play the Angels that night but the game was postponed two days and played at Shea Stadium. After the incident, many suspected foul play.

Fans and sports talk show hosts theorized Steinbrenner had orchestrated the accident to gain support for the new stadium he had been lobbying for years. The falling beam was about the only thing that went wrong for the Yankees in 1998. Including the post season, the Yankees finished the season with a record of 125-50 and swept the Padres in the World Series.
