William McKinley, the predecessor of Theodore Roosevelt, the best presidential athlete, was, ironically, one of the worst. Whereas Roosevelt was a consummate adventurer and in many ways redefined the image of the president's role in sports, McKinley, wrote his biographer, "seems never to have taken much interest in sports or games."
