Boise State did everything they were supposed to do this year.  

The Broncos won the WAC while going 11-0 (with a game against 7-4 Fresno State on Friday), even including a victory at #17 Oregon.  But, Boise State will not only miss a chance to win a national championship, but they won't even be able to play in a BCS game.  

Utah, also undefeated, will grab the automatic non-BCS conference slot, leaving the Broncos, who in their last BCS appearance won a 43-42 overtime thriller against a heavily-favored Oklahoma team in what was arguably the most exciting football game of all time, stuck in the 2008 Humanitarian Bowl, staring at the BCS (and likely three lower-ranked teams) from the outside.
