Young burst onto the national spotlight with his unbelievable performance against USC in the 2006 NCAA Championship game. He was picked third overall in the NFL Draft and brought his magic to the Tennessee Titans.
In his first year, he led four fourth-quarter comebacks and was 8-5 as a starter. In 2007, he went 9-6 and led the Titans into the playoffs. But this past year has been full of controversy for Young.
In the first game of the season, he was promptly picked-off twice and the fans in Tennessee booed. An emotional Young didn’t want to enter back into the game until Jeff Fisher convinced him. Four plays later he injured his knee. He was scheduled for an MRI the next day and didn’t show up. The Titans could not get a hold of Young and called the Nashville police. The Titans and Fisher were worried because Young’s therapist told them that Young had mentioned suicide several times. Young was eventually found watching football at a friend’s house and it’s unclear whether the situation was blown out of proportion, but the benching and injury definitely took it’s toll on Young.
Taking over was Kerry Collins, who has now led the Titans to an AFC best 10-1 record and eliminated any possibility of Young being inserted back into the lineup. Young has been relegated to the shadows on the sideline. While Young can’t be pleased with how this year has unfolded maybe it’s not as bad as it seems.
After his rookie season he thought about retirement, and maybe this break is exactly what he needs to focus again.
