OLYMPICS HISTORY: Johnson became the first to receive gold medals in both the 200m and 400m during the 1996 Games. He still holds the World Record from his 200m time from 1996 of 19.32 seconds. He repeated his gold medal performance in the 400m during the 2000 Olympics. Michael Johnson was known for his unique upright running stance and short strides.

Michael Johnson epitomized American athletes bravado with his golden shoes. The shoes seemed to take on a life of their own and were prominently featured during every telecast Johnson was a part of during the 1996 Games in Atlanta. The shoes were custom-made by Nike and weighed about 3 ounces. Johnson made the shoes unforgettable when he set the World Record in the 200m.
