The biggest innovation of the past few years in the world of sports media has been the meteoric rise of social media, especially the phenomenal growth of Twitter. With Twitter, almost anyone is afforded an immediate access to a large speaking podium. Anyone who wants to be heard can have a voice – athletes, coaches, front office staff, owners and even members of the media all can get their own word out to the public whenever they want without having to go through a third-party (the media or an editor).
Clearly this has greatly altered the landscape of sports media and sports itself. Much of the news is broken on Twitter these days. But the ability to instantly post a statement without running it through any filter can also lead to people getting in trouble. Most recently retired pitcher and current radio broadcaster Mike Bacsik gained Twitter infamy for his
alcohol-infused tweets during Sunday's Mavericks-Spurs game. The worst of the tweets stated "congrats to all the dirty Mexicans in San Antonio." Bacsik’s Twitter mishap may cost him his job, and he wouldn’t be the first to be seriously punished for tweeting.
Twitter has led to suspensions, firings, hefty fines, and lawsuits; just some of the stories in the Top 10 Sports Twitter Stories.
