Jelena Dokic over #1 Martina Hingis, 6-2, 6-0, 1st Round, 1999

Upon further examination the surprise of this defeat is lessened when one takes into consideration the mental collapse that befell Hingis just weeks prior in the finals of the French Open when she lost - both the match and her emotions - to Steffi Graf. But even so, for the former champion to be taken out in the first round by a qualifier ranked 129th - even a highly touted junior such as Dokic - was still a staggering result.  Hingis, who won the Australian Open in 1999, would never again win a Grand Slam event.
